Welcome to our NGO Microland

Microland, helping nature thrive

Microland is a non-profit association founded in 2015 by Gérard Filippi, entomologist and naturalist expert. Our NGO contributes to discovering the biodiversity of threatened ecosystems, by collaborating with the local populations of the archipelago, São Tomé and Príncipe.

In partnership with the Marseille-based Consulate of São Tomé and Príncipe, OPIE and BirdLife International, Microland organises this venture over several years, with two expeditions per year. Our actions symbolise the promise of a colossal advance in the ecological territory understanding, through our "Archipelago's Biodiversity, the São Tomé and Príncipe Project ".

“Archipelago's Biodiversity ”, the São Tomé and Príncipe Project

Located in the Gulf of Guinea, the Democratic Republic of São Tomé and Príncipe is home to a unique, fragile and still largely unknown biodiversity. With the support of its partners, Microland is implementing a program to study and enhance the biodiversity of this exceptional territory, through "Archipelago's Biodiversity, the São Tomé and Príncipe Project".

In February 2019, our first mission was to meet local stakeholders and identify partners interested in the deployment of micro-structures for the natural heritage's enhancement. The opportunity resided in carrying out biodiversity inventories of the Obô National Park, to improving knowledge on certain groups of unknown species.

This immersion has made it possible to implement scientific inventory and biometrics protocols on biodiversity. Meetings with the local scientific community and the Ministry of Forests of São Tomé and Príncipe also favoured future collaboration projects (research, conservation, etc.).
